A 1973 Jazz Bass modified by Roger Sadowsky
This Fender Jazz Bass has been modified by Roger Sadowsky, a renowned New York craftsman.
Sadowsky is now known as a world-class high-end brand, but its roots lie in repair and modification. Roger Sadowsky opened a repair shop in New York in 1979, and while responding to the requests of many musicians, he has undertaken numerous modifications to evolve existing basses into more practical instruments.
The bass itself is from 1973.
It has a natural finish, and the body is made of ash wood.
The one-piece maple neck, black binding, and block position markers are characteristic of this era.
The pickups have been replaced with Sadowsky pickups. A BADASS II bridge has been installed. The pickguard, tuners, and pots are not the original 1973 models, and have been replaced at an unknown time.
While many Sadowsky Mod. instruments feature active preamps, this particular instrument is currently passive.
A battery box remains on the back of the body, suggesting that an active circuit was once installed, but it is currently disconnected and non-functional.
A jack plate, likely from its active era, remains on the side of the body, but the jack hole is blocked.
This instrument is in player's condition, showing considerable playing history.
The paint peeling and dents on the back of the neck make it slightly rough to the touch, but this does not significantly affect playability.
There is a crack in the fretboard near the nut, but currently, we believe it does not affect playability or durability.
The sound is characterized by clear bass and attacking treble, typical of an ash body and maple neck.
While possessing a solid low end, it doesn't sound excessively powerful; instead, it delivers a thick, resonant tone with a strong presence. The rich resonance unique to wood aged for over 50 years is palpable, resulting in a sound that combines excellent responsiveness with a deep, resonant tone.
This is a truly captivating instrument where the histories of vintage Fender and Sadowsky intersect.
You can feel the history that has unfolded and changed since then.
Wouldn't you like to be the next to write your own history with this bass?
