Fellas', grab a coffee, or a beer, or what ever you prefer,,,,, and get comfortable... This is gonna' be another one of my long ones..
Up for grabs is this NEW PAIR of 15" coaxial, 2 way/ 3 element concentric time aligned loudspeakers...
The idea of the design of these speakers was to preserve the localization, point source and time alignment in your music.. With ANY other design, either the tweeters are out front of the woofer, behind the woofer, or even worse, in a physically different location on the baffle board. This destroys the point source and time aligned properties of the details in the signal.
I wanted to create a 15" like the famous RCA units with the tweeter mounted in the middle of the woofer's core, and not have to spend thousands for an old 80 year old speaker that will fail at any time..
So, here at PMR, we started with a large robust magnetic structure for the woofer, and milled the center of the core out in order to allow the mounting of the tweeter , and have the tweeter's voice coil at the same depth as the woofer's voice coil as viewed from the side.... and- what a tweeter we used! it's this one:
More on the tweeter later..
Then, we tapped out the front pole plate to allow BOLTING to an aluminum "Sunfire" style heavy duty frame... It's the dual 4 spoke design, and has spring loaded/ bare wire terminals that can handle 14 gauge conductors....It has the standard 4/8 hole mounting pattern .
The voice coil for the woofer is a full 3" in diameter. It has an aluminum former that is radially vented and wound with pure AMERICAN copper windings, not that chyna /import 95% pure stuff, but the AMERICAN 99.99% pure copper stuff..
The spider/suspension is a high compliance/ high compliance treated textile and a flat profile... Nothing too far out of the ordinary there..
The Litz wires are COPPER Litz wires. This is a drastic improvement in clarity as compared to the usual industry standard pot-metal silver/gray stuff which does nothing but smudge and smear the signal before it even gets to the woofer's voice coil...
That brings us to the woofer's cone assembly... This is similar to some of the old Infinity type cones, with a pure pulp cone that is smooth/ no ribs, and is curved in it's profile.... It's somewhat shallow, like an old Western Electric/ Altec cone assembly was...It's neck dipped and repressed...
A half roll poly foam-rubber surround was employed. It was selected for this unit because of it's high compliance and excursion capabilities, but also because that foam rubber is really good at absorbing any remaining cone edge resonances which would otherwise cause those secondary "Ghost Notes"... This cone plays nice and crisp.. It starts and stops rather quickly...
Front mounting gaskets that are a medium density poly foam rubber were used, so that you will actually have an air tight seal on your baffle boards... MUCH better than the usual repressed cardboard stuff...
That brings us to an interesting feature of this unit- the whizzer cone.
This whizzer is a rather large unit. It extends the response out past what just the cone assembly is capable of, and 'hands off' the frequency response up to the tweeter... The whizzer is mounted directly onto the top of the voice coil, so the impulse speed is as fast as possible. This makes a 3 element design and really does improve the midrange response. The center has a protective yet open weave/ acoustically transparent screen type cap, which the tweeter fires directly through...
And, now that tweeter. If you want the specifics of this particular tweeter you can look at the link that I posted at the beginning of this description.. it's a very high output, high fidelity driver. The body is made from aluminum and has that deep horn profile and deep phase plug. It's tough to beat a high quality ring radiator tweeter design...
There are L-pads with this pair, so that you can dial in the level of the tweeters to your particular tastes, or as you move them from room to room and need to re-adjust, or even if you are playing around with different enclosure configurations...
I did solder up a pair of 12dB/ octave crossovers, and I used high quality poly film caps/ music quality capacitors, and I also used AIR CORE inductors. These are NOT the "Purts Express" quality components, but true hi fi quality AMERICAN made parts were used... PE parts are import 95% copper..... enough said about that stuff... I'm NOT a fan of that level of components that are passed off as high quality..
These film caps and 99.99% copper inductors preserve the details in the music as well as the staging, imaging, depth, and sibilance of the music..
These are an 8 ohm impedance, handle 200 watts RMS have an efficiency of 95dB, and a crazy wide response of 24Hz- 32KHz!!!
*************** 1 YEAR LIMITED TRANSFERRABLE WARRANTY BY PMR************************
That pretty much sums it up...
I;'ll include my 15 day " NO GAMBLE" return option from delivery date (((less customer damage))) if for ANY REASON you simply don't like what you just bought, or if you disagree with any of this...
Sop, if you want to see what time aligned loudspeakers sound like, then here's your chance to own a NEW pair of monstrously large 15" speakers...
ANY questions or concerns, just ask.
THANKS GUYS!!!
