The Gibson 2008 Guitar of the Month (GOTM) Reverse Explorer
The Gibson 2008 GOTM Reverse Explorer was officially released in September of 2008. It was part of a limited series of 12 unique models released each month that year, only 1,000 units were produced worldwide of each release. The item up for sale here is #106 out of 1000
Original Launch Details
The Reverse Explorer was the ninth entry in the 2008 GOTM series, following the success of the previous year's Reverse Flying V.
- Production Quantity: Strictly limited to 1,000 instruments.
- Unique Branding: Each guitar featured a unique ink stamp on the back of the headstock showing its specific production number (e.g., "106 of 1000").
- Included Accessories: Shipped with a special "Guitar of the Month 2008" hard shell case featuring a crushed white interior, white cloth shroud, and a bolted-on premium handle.
Core Specifications
According to official historical specs from Gibson, the model featured a radical inversion of the classic Explorer body.
- Body & Finish: One-piece mahogany body finished in Antique Walnut.
- Pickguard: A distinctive carbon fibre lightning bolt pickguard extending the length of the body.
- Neck: A hybrid profile between '50s rounded and '60s slim-taper, topped with a 22-fret rosewood or ebony fingerboard and carbon fibre block inlays.
- Electronics: Equipped with a 57 Classic humbucker in the neck and a 57 Classic Plus in the bridge, both featuring custom copper-plated, gunmetal bronze powder-coated covers.
- Headstock: An art deco-inspired "Gumby" headstock design featuring the rare "McCarty era" Gibson logo and Steinberger Gearless Tuners.
- Carbon Fiber Appointments: Unlike standard Explorers, this model used carbon fiber for both the lightning-bolt pickguard and the block fingerboard inlays (at the 5th and 12th frets).
- The "Checkered" Variant: Some limited batches featured a grey checkered pickguard, with matching fingerboard inlays and truss rod cover instead of the solid carbon fiber, identified by model code DSRXSTHG1. NOTE: This item has these features.
- Tuning Technology: It was one of the few Gibson models to feature Steinberger Gearless Tuners, which pull the string straight down into the headstock rather than winding around a post, providing a 40:1 tuning ratio.
Condition: As the photos will attest, this guitar is in excellent shape, shows very clean with minimal swirl marks. No dings or checks.
The guitar has been kept in a temperature and humidity controlled room. The neck is straight.
It will be well packaged for transport.
