Up for sale is an extremely limited edition Gibson Custom Shop ‘Inspired By’ Roy Orbison Signature 70th Anniversary ES-335, built in 2006.  

This guitar is part of the first run that sold out in 2 hours and is serial number #8 of only 70 made. It is COLLECTOR GRADE condition and has never been played or displayed. It has been sitting in its original Gibson Custom Shop hard case since it was purchased brand new. It still has the protective plastic on the pickguard!! It is impossible to find these guitars, particularly in this condition.

The 70th Anniversary model was released in 2006 and strictly limited to 70 pieces worldwide and can be identified by the RO serial number and Roy postage stamp on the back of the headstock. It should not be confused with the signature model released in 2007 (200 made with different serial number sequence).

The guitar is based on an early ’80s model ES-335 that Roy played in his famous 1987 televised concert and which he used extensively during his time in the super group, The Travelling Wilburys.

According to Gibson’s website, Custom Shop engineers managed to get their hands on a pair of Orbison’s guitars from this period, and the resulting specs were used to develop the Roy Orbison ES-335. Unique features include a one-piece mahogany neck with vintage 1959 rounded profile, holly headstock veneer with vintage tulip tuners, and antiqued ebony-finished hardware.
