Hello and welcome to the House of Chrome.

You are looking at a rare late 1930's to 40's era Shure Brothers 70-H model crystal microphone. This was a very modern design for it's time and you can see the transition with it as the microphone companies began steering away from the spring mics that were so common in the 1920's and 30's. It has the Spring design without the actual springs. It simply screwed onto any stand. It comes with the period early (even rarer) Shure S-36 desk stand and the Shure A84B on / off switch adapter. More on that stand later.

Pic # 2 is from an old Shure catalog I have showing the mics basic specs.

This 70-H mic is in very good physical condition considering it's age as seen in the pictures provided. The satin chrome body shows just small signs of wear in the form of tiny scratches and a little chrome loss but it's been thoroughly been cleaned and the looks great overall. Zero dents or fractures. The mic even has all of it's original screws which is a real bonus. The front screen is free of any dents or tarnish and the inner black cloth screen looks great. The 70-H Shure badge is legible though worn. Overall I would rate this mic an easy 7 on a scale of 1 -10.

It should be noted right away that this microphone is non-working as the original crystal element no longer works though still present. There is plenty of room to install a new crystal or controlled magnetic element if one chooses to actually use the mic live but I would personally leave it alone for historical reasons.

The classic model 70-H has some good weight to it and it's measurements are 3 inches tall X 3 inches wide X 1 1/2inch deep. Mic is solid with no loose or rattling parts. With the stand included the mic measures10 inches tall X 5 inches wide X 7 inches deep.

You'll notice the mic sits on the beautiful early Shure A84B on / off switch adapter which was an accessory that Shure sold at that time because no Shure model mic actually came with an on / off switch.

Shure mics didn't have the on / off switches until around 1960 so all the pre 60's mics would have used the A84B adapter to get that option. The adapter simply screwed onto the bottom of the mic and these look really sharp when attached.

The A84B looks really nice with almost no wear and has most of the Shure decal still on the rear of the adapter.

The stand is a very nice (and very rare) early Shure Brothers S-36 model. This stand was manufactured for just over 20 years starting in 1939 and ending in 1960 but this early model was the first example and came with only 4 bottom pads instead of the standard 5.

When Shure first offered this stand for sale in 1939 this was the type available. It was only sold for a couple years like this until they decided to add the 5th rubber pad in the front center of the base. I have only come across 6 or 7 of these ever and I come across over the years. The stand alone is worth about $150.00 or more.

The S-36 model was an all aluminum piece that was very modern and very deco in it's time. A smooth, teardrop shape that still looks fantastic 70 years later. A classic look that will compliment any older Shure mic.

You'll notice right away that the stand has nice paint overall and is free of any scratches or dents but there is one paint chip towards the front of the base. The stand has it's original metal front insignia though the painted Shure logo has been mostly worn away. It has 4 original rubber pads on the bottom and it's original cable clamp.

If you are a serious collector of vintage Americans mics then you know what a unique mic and stand this is. She'll make an awesome display piece anywhere it sits in the home, studio or office.
