Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome.

If you are looking for something a little different for the vintage mic collection then you might want to consider this very unique and somewhat rare Altec 633A Dynamic microphone manufactured in the 1950's. The mic has a very modern / contemporary design that was a signature part of Altec's line up. It comes with all the accessories shown including the period Altec AP24 desk stand. This 633A model was originally sold by Western Electric in the 1940's before the company became Altec and the same model was sold under their name for about 10 to 15 years before being discontinued.

This mic was called a "salt shaker" due to it's very unique and obvious styling.

Pic # 2 shows both this model and the 632C along with their basic characteristics. The 633A was a basic dynamic mic set at high impedance being completely void of bass like the microphones today and was a great mic for general broadcasting and paging purposes but happens to make for an excellent harp mic today as it has a grittier, old school sound. That being said the microphone no longer works as the element is dead and this should be used for prop, display or repair purposes only.

Pic # 3 shows this very model mic being used in a live performance by The Beatles sometime around the early 1960's.

This mic is being sold for far less than it would be if it was working as it should. I've seen these just the mic alone go for upwards of $450.00 on Ebay and Reverb in great working condition.

You'll notice right away that the 633A and stand are in very good overall condition and certainly above average though the stands shows much less wear. The mic comes with the original hunter green paint scheme. There are typical scuff marks, scratches and small paint loss but the these items are free of dents, fractures or corrosion. I'd rate the condition of the mic and stand a true 7 and the stand an easy 9 + on a scale of 1 - 10. These older mics are usually in very rough physical condition.

The mic comes with an Atlas GN-6 flexible chrome gooseneck that gives you some decent height and tilt to work with. There is an original 18 inch cable that runs down the length of the gooseneck exiting out the rear of the base. The cable is properly wired in case you ever plan on replacing the element with something that actually works.

The cable is soft, pliable and shows no exterior wear. It comes with a vintage quality Cannon male XLR end connector that's properly wired and completes the look of this display piece.

The base is quite heavy and it's the older AP24 type with the cast iron base making it very stable for just about any microphone. It comes with the 3 felt pads on the bottom, cable clamp and fresh paint which is in excellent shape.

The dimensions of the mic with stand are appx 11 1/2 high X 4 1/2 wide X 6 1/2 inches deep. Weighs roughly about 6 pounds total so foreign shipping will be a bit spendy due to much higher shipping prices as of lately.

These older Altec model mics seem to be even more collectible than the Shure 55S interestingly enough and harder to come by. They keep rising in value so this is a good investment at the end of the day and can always be repaired if a working element is installed in the housing.

As with all my vintage items...

I can promise you will be happy with it for the price paid. If not...I have a no hassle return policy. The shipping will be on you as I believe that's fair but the purchase price would be refunded. Simply return in the same nice condition...period. Check my rating. INTERNATIONAL BUYERS are welcome as well. Buyer must pay within 24 hours or an unpaid case will be opened and item relisted. Domestic buyer will get priority shipping.

If you have any questions feel free to ask and...thanks for looking.
