Give the right instruments to a genius, and you will achieve unprecedented results. This phrase encapsulates what Tom Murphy and the Gibson Custom Shop have managed to create with the new Murphy Lab project.
The new Gibson management has indeed decided to involve Tom Murphy directly within the Gibson Custom Shop once again, aiming to create a new generation of aging that is even more accurate and realistic than in the past: a decisive break from previous manufacturing techniques and a remarkable leap forward in terms of qualitative results.
The Murphy Lab perfectly recreates, using natural processes rather than manual ones, the same aging conditions of the finish found on original vintage instruments. The finishes are ultra-thin, characterized by a distinct and substantial "crackle," providing an absolutely authentic feel. It truly feels as if you are holding an original vintage instrument, but with all the quality and performance that only the Gibson Custom Shop can offer today.
From a technical standpoint, we are talking about instruments that represent the highest level ever achieved by the Gibson Custom Shop in terms of accuracy and quality: they encompass all the technical innovations—such as "period-correct" capacitors and finally "unpotted" Custom Buckers—along with the extensive experience and quality generated by the recent True Historic series, which has allowed the Gibson Custom Shop's production to make a remarkable leap forward.
In particular, this specimen is part of a limited series of instruments produced by the Gibson Custom Shop, the **Limited Edition Collection**, featuring a combination of aesthetic characteristics that evoke some of the most legendary instruments in Gibson's history: specifically, this reproduces an original instrument from 1959, complete with the chromatic "shadow" left by the pickguard on the finish.
