MUSIC MAN 1977 StingRay I, a model that could be called Leo Fender's last legacy: a characterful guitar with Fender DNA for players who find a Strat or Tele too commonplace.
After leaving Fender, Leo Fender founded Music Man with like-minded partners, and in 1976 he created this guitar version of the StingRay. The StingRay bass is famous, but few know the guitar exists, which gives it a connoisseur's appeal.
The StingRay was offered in two fingerboard radius versions: I (12"R) and II (7.25"R). This unit has humbucking pickups and an active tone circuit that was groundbreaking for its time. Controls from top: volume / treble / bass. The lower switch selects rear / front / mix / phase, and a seesaw switch adds a bright boost, giving a range of tonal variations surprising for a '70s instrument.
'70s ash and maple are often thought of as hard-sounding, but the treble and bass controls let this StingRay go freely from bright to warm. A thin grip and narrow neck width make it exceptionally easy to play. Recommended for anyone seeking a hidden gem with Fender-derived design ideas, a first vintage guitar, or humbucker tone with modern clarity.
