An extraordinary and exceptionally rare 9-string guitar-lute made by Hermann Hauser I in Munich in 1922.

It is an astonishing example of Hauser's craftsmanship—not only a beautiful and important historical instrument from one of the greatest names in guitar-making history, but a genuinely superb player.

The workmanship is remarkable throughout. Particularly striking is the long, sculptural pegbox with its sweeping profile and beautifully carved angel's head and wings. The figured maple bowl is exceptionally attractive, while the spruce soundboard, carved rose, bridge, fingerboard and numerous individually fitted pegs demonstrate the extraordinary level of craftsmanship invested in the instrument.

I have encountered only one other Hauser I instrument of this unusual construction, which is held in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, alongside the celebrated Hauser guitar made for Andrés Segovia.

More importantly, the sound is exceptional.

It is a remarkably resonant and responsive instrument, with a quick, immediate attack, excellent projection and beautiful balance across the register. The trebles are clear and singing, while the extended basses give the instrument surprising depth and richness. Despite its substantial visual presence, the construction is light and responsive, and the instrument feels alive under the fingers.

It has the characteristic intimacy and colour one hopes for from a historical plucked instrument, but with remarkable volume and projection.

This is an instrument that deserves to be played, not simply displayed.

The instrument is configured with nine individual strings, combining a guitar-like fretted playing range with extended open basses. Materials and workmanship are of the highest quality, including a spruce soundboard, beautifully figured maple bowl, carved soundhole rose, elaborate extended pegbox and carved angel-head terminal.

The original label reads Munich, 1922, and bears Hermann Hauser's handwritten signature.

The instrument has just returned from the workshop following a complete professional restoration and is now in excellent playing condition.
