Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome.
You are looking at a nice Astatic 77 model microphone from the 1950's. This was a high quality dynamic cardioid microphone offered by Astatic and was their answer to the very popular Shure Brothers 55 S model mic at the time. This unit has been tested and though these 77's rarely work well today...this example has defied the odds and does work very well. It comes with the short cable in which to operate.
Pic # 2 shows this very mic in an old Astatic catalog I have.
Pic # 3 shows Jerry Lee Lewis using one of these while performing live in concert.
This 77 has a classic midcentury look and was used by many musicians of that era as the mic had a fantastic sound. It should be noted that this mic has an adjustable impedance switch (as seen in pic # 5) does work but the mic has a natural "rockabilly" tone with a bit less bass than what most mics have today. A very 1950's sound so if that is what you are looking for then this mic will do you justice. It's uni-directional and mostly picks up sound that is just in front of it.
The mic has a bright tone but the signal strength is very strong. I come across these 77 model mics often and they always have a slew of issues that need to be addressed before using for any live performance. The elements are always loose inside and you don't want to open these up unless you absolutely know what you are doing otherwise you'll ruin the mic. The elements are very sensitive to static shock. About 80% of these mics I come across no longer work well and it's usually because somebody decided at some point to fix the issues that they were not educated on.
If you have a good E.Q you can simply turn the bass level up accordingly. Again, very rockabilly tone.
Everything is tight on this mic and has been thoroughly cleaned it won't look any better than it currently does. It's not physically perfect but it's pretty darn nice overall.
As you can see there are lite signs of wear on the satin chrome finish. No dents, deep scratches, engravings or nicks and it has a beautiful luster. There is some lite bubbling and a few scuff marks here and there. Also some lite corrosion on the front grill. The black silk screen is 100% complete in the front and rear with zero rips, odors or holes. Just some lite discoloration. The joint mechanism holds strong and the mic head tilts backwards as needed. The on / off switch slides smoothly as well. Impedance switch works perfectly as well and the label looks great.
This Astatic 77L is a solid 8 out of a scale of 1 - 10 on the cosmetic side. The 77 has an elegant, timeless look that set these vintage mics apart from the others in the 1950's and presently. Though several Japanese manufacturers made microphones that looked almost identical...the 77 had superior styling and sound over the competition.
This microphone with F-11 adapter will screw onto any American desk or floor stand.
The mic comes with the old 3 pin screw on type cable in which to operate and the cable is in excellent shape. Simply leave the short cable screwed onto the mic at all times then attach any longer standard XLR cable as an extension and you're in business. It gives you many options to work with that you'll appreciate.
MICROPHONE STAND SHOWN IS NOT PART OF SALE...USED GOT DISPLAY PURPOSES ONLY.
If you need a vintage American mic that will pop and draw attention anywhere it's used or displayed the 77 model will do the trick.
