The AD-50 DOUBLE BEAT is a fuzz and wah combination pedal from the early days of Roland.

Founded in 1972, Roland introduced the AD-50 DOUBLE BEAT in 1973, making it one of the earliest effects pedals produced by the company. This was released before the BOSS brand became globally dominant, making the AD-50 a particularly interesting piece in the history of Roland effects.

As its name suggests, the DOUBLE BEAT combines two effects, FUZZ and WAH, in a large-format enclosure.

The fuzz section is especially distinctive. It uses a silicon transistor fuzz circuit and features a three-position FUZZ TONE SELECT switch, allowing you to choose between significantly different tonal characters. From rough, heavily compressed vintage fuzz to sharp and aggressive tones, the circuit offers a unique range of tonal variations. This particular fuzz circuit was never released as a standalone model, making it a feature unique to the AD-50.

The wah section uses a conventional pedal-operated design, but has a sharp and distinctive filter character that differs from modern wah pedals. The FUZZ and WAH sections can each be switched on and off independently, allowing you to use the wah or fuzz individually, or combine both for an intense fuzz-wah sound.

The heavy-duty metal chassis and distinctive control layout give this pedal the unmistakable presence of a 1970s Japanese effects unit. It represents an era before the BOSS Compact series, when Roland was experimenting with a variety of ideas in effects design.

There are signs of use consistent with its age, but the pedal is in good working condition.

This is a relatively rare Made in Japan Japanese vintage effects pedal, and would make an interesting addition to any effects collection.
