C.F. Martin is one of the most historic and influential names in American stringed instruments. Martin mandolins were developed with a design philosophy distinct from that of Gibson, incorporating strong influences from classical mandolin construction.

This is a rare 1920 C.F. Martin Style-AK mandolin, featuring exceptionally high-grade figured Hawaiian Koa. Instruments from this period are already uncommon, and examples equipped with such beautiful Koa are particularly difficult to find.

The body is constructed entirely from solid figured Hawaiian Koa, giving the mandolin a striking appearance with beautiful natural figuring. Mahogany is used for the neck, while the fingerboard and bridge are made from Ebony.

Martin's mandolin designs from this period feature a shorter scale and body construction influenced by classical mandolins. The recessed pickguard is another distinctive feature of these early Martin instruments.

The tonal character is quite different from the powerful, aggressive sound often associated with Gibson mandolins. Instead, this Martin produces a gentle, supple, and beautifully delicate tone.

Its sound has a remarkably rich and refined resonance, almost reminiscent of a small 12-string guitar. Individual notes blend smoothly together while retaining excellent clarity, making the instrument particularly well suited as an accompanying instrument for vocal music.

There are areas of finish loss and various small dents throughout the instrument, but there is no significant damage and the overall condition remains good for a mandolin that is more than 100 years old.

The neck condition is excellent, and the relatively low string height makes the instrument surprisingly comfortable to play compared with many vintage mandolins of this age.

There are some cracks in part of the tuning-machine buttons. They are currently functional without any problems, but this issue is not covered by the warranty.

This is a particularly rare opportunity to own a 1920 Martin mandolin featuring beautiful high-grade Hawaiian Koa. It is recommended not only for vintage instrument collectors but also for players looking to begin their mandolin journey with a truly special historic instrument.
