ReVox B77 Stereo Tape Recorder — 2-Track, 3¾/7½ IPS — Serviced and Tested — Fully Operational
The ReVox B77 needs no introduction to the serious open-reel community, and this example is exactly what that reputation demands: a fully operational unit that received substantial electronic maintenance and precise alignment from a knowledgeable previous owner, with no deferred maintenance. This is the original B77 — not a MkII — representing the first iteration of what many consider the finest consumer/semi-pro reel-to-reel deck ever built.
This Unit
Owned, used carefully, and meticulously maintained by a skilled and knowledgeable enthusiast. Prior to my acquisition, all aluminum electrolytic capacitors were replaced, with the exception of the three MP motor capacitors, and the heads and electronics were aligned at 7½ IPS using a professional test tape. A printed frequency-response report (Anlen test tape, dated 3/27/2026) is included and pictured in the listing.
I have since tested the machine myself. Confirmed fully functional in all respects — transport, record, playback, all switching and metering. Head life conservatively estimated at 75%+ with an even wear pattern. 2-track stereo configuration at 3¾ and 7½ IPS. Multivoltage design, currently configured for US current (120V). Controls operate cleanly and noiselessly, and both VU meters function properly.
The wooden cabinet is a custom-made enclosure fitted to the original metal chassis, very nicely constructed, and includes the distinctive gold-tone carrying handle shown in the photographs. According to the previous owner, the machine was used in this cabinet for years without thermal issues. Access openings have also been incorporated into the bottom of the cabinet for the calibration adjustments.
Cosmetic condition is very good overall. There are some light reel marks on the face visible under close examination, along with minor signs of normal use and age — nothing structural, nothing detracting from the look or function of the machine. Please examine the numerous detailed photographs and video for the best description of cosmetic condition.
Includes a compatible power cable and frequency-response test report. Spindles will be removed and packed separately for shipment protection.
Ships worldwide, or local pickup can be arranged. Package will be large, heavy, delicate, and insured for full value, so shipping may be a significant cost. Quoted international rate is for shipping to Australia, the furthest location from my USA address. Please inquire for a shipping quote to your specific international address.
About the B77
Introduced by Studer-Revox of Switzerland as the successor to the acclaimed A77, the B77 set a standard for build quality and audio performance that remains a benchmark decades later. The chassis is aluminum die-cast — the same grade of construction used in Studer's professional studio machines — and the three-motor transport system features an electronically servo-controlled direct-drive capstan machined to one one-thousandth of a millimeter, hard chrome-plated and artificially aged for long-term stability. The result is speed consistency that borders on measurably irrelevant deviation. Tape heads are manufactured from Revodur alloy, Studer-Revox's proprietary magnetically soft, physically hard material, and are built to the same standard as those fitted to full professional Studer decks. Three-head configuration (erase, record, playback) enables true source/tape monitoring.
The B77 (original, no suffix) features logic-controlled transport — an advancement over the relay-based A77 — with the characteristic forward-leaning control panel layout that makes operation intuitive and editing convenient. The built-in splicing block and non-magnetic cutter are present on the front panel. The unit also supports audible tape shuttling for precise edit location.
