Aiwa RV-1a NHK Ribbon Microphone
The RV-1a is an NHK-spec'd Aiwa VM17, which was Japan's far superior version of the RCA 77D. NHK was the main broadcasting station in Japan and had microphones custom-made to their specifications, much like RTF (French Radio and Television Broadcasting) and the BBC.
NHK ribbon models use better output transformers and components, and generally have a noticeably improved frequency response - which is saying a lot, because the Aiwa VM17 is one of the best ribbon mics we've ever heard, far outperforming the RCA 77D/DX. As with most Japanese ribbons, it has a 5-position low roll-off switch at the bottom of the mic.
It is estimated that only 600-700 of these microphones were manufactured, and this one is number 23. As with all 77D-style microphones, this mic sounds best in its unobstructed bidirectional pickup pattern, with full but balanced low-end, a meaty midrange, and remarkably smooth top-end.
This mic has some age-related finish wear, scratches, dents, and discoloration.
It sounds loud and clear with no need for a cloud-lifter.
