About This Listing

Electronics are tip-top. I use Standard and Rick-O-Sound outputs.

Neck is marvelous. Frets are in good shape: very low (by design). Low-moderate wear: pretty light for 45 years. Only scratch is tiny, on back of 9th fret (pictured): I don’t notice it when playing. Neck recently adjusted using both truss rods without difficulty.

I tried to capture all surface imperfections in photos. There have never been any cracks or structural issues anywhere on the instrument.

Original case in good condition but dimensions don’t quite accommodate strap buttons. Fabric is torn there. 2 tiny tears outside. Mechanically perfect; 3 defects pictured.

Stereo-to-dual-mono adapter included so you can start working on your Geddy/Lemmy/Cliff/Chris Squire sound immediately. Just know that you will want a guitar amp and a bass amp to explore the sonic possibilities 🤘

Particularly badass month produced: September of 1978 yields serial number RI XXXX. I thought for many years that “RI” was common to all Rickenbacker production runs. Only realized a few years ago that R signifies 1978 and I (9th letter) signifies September (9th month).

Product Overview
Initially developed as a deluxe, two-pickup upgrade to Rickenbacker’s 4000 bass, the Rickenbacker 4001 bass guitar has become a notable model for its long list of famous players. First released in 1961 with production lasting through the very early ‘80s, the 4001 has earned fans in bass players like Lemmy Kilmister, Kim Gordon, Rick James, Geddy Lee, and many, many more. The extra pickup was added to the 4001 to widen tonal possibilities and up the bass frequency response.
