I knew I had something when I opened the case and my horn tech, who has been known to grab a broom and chase me out of the shop yelling, "make it into a lamp", instead said, " Wow, nice horn. I can make it work". And he did. This baby is an absolute blast from the past. I know there are a few dents and the lacquer's a bit "aged" but you can't actually hear lacquer and the dents don't effect the tone. But you can hear this horn and know why they had that reputation. It's firm and well balanced, plays easily from bottom to top and has a warm rich tone everywhere. It's not heavy but projects well. The five digit serial number starting with 90XXX dates it to 1921-22 but it will still do what it did the day it was made. The mouthpiece is an old Martin with a brass ligature and has a bit of dental wear. I know you're going to use a better one but I'm sending it along anyway. The case is not original, it's a Conn, but is about the same age and in good working condition with some cosmetic flaws as you can see in the pics. The latches and hinges are intact and function as they should. The interior has aged but is intact and clean. This is a chance to have a piece of history that's ready to go right out of the box and, if well cared for will give another 90+ years of service.
