About this listing
The EarthQuaker Devices Sunn O))) Life Pedal V3 is an all-analogue octave distortion and boost developed in collaboration with experimental drone pioneers Sunn O))).
Designed around the core front-end signal chain used by Stephen O'Malley and Greg Anderson during the writing and recording of Life Metal, the Life Pedal is built to create huge levels of saturation, harmonic complexity and amp-pushing gain. V3 refines the concept with a stronger octave response, a dedicated octave footswitch and EarthQuaker Devices' Flexi-Switch technology.
At its core you've got three complementary ingredients: a blendable analogue octave-up, a brutal distortion circuit with three clipping options, and a powerful MOSFET clean boost.
Use it for doom, drone, sludge and stoner rock, or take it well outside heavy music for experimental textures, octave leads, feedback manipulation and massive ambient sounds.
Why Choose the Sunn O))) Life Pedal V3?
Octave + Distortion + Boost
The Life Pedal V3 signal path runs:
Octave → Distortion → Boost
The distortion and boost sections can operate independently, while the octave is tied to the distortion section and requires Amplitude to be active. This is an important distinction when comparing the Life Pedal with conventional multi-effects pedals.
That architecture allows the three sections to interact naturally rather than feeling like unrelated effects placed in the same enclosure.
Blendable Analogue Octave Up
The Life Pedal's octave is an all-discrete analogue full-wave rectifier inspired by classic vintage octave/fuzz designs.
Turn the Octave control clockwise to gradually blend more octave into the distortion.
At restrained settings it adds harmonic complexity. Push it further and the Life Pedal moves into aggressive, clangorous octave-fuzz territory.
Because it's an analogue monophonic octave, playing technique matters. EQD recommends using the neck pickup and single notes above the 12th fret for the strongest octave response. Chords intentionally become much more chaotic.
Dedicated V3 Octave Footswitch
One of the most significant improvements on V3 is the dedicated third footswitch for the octave.
Previous versions required the octave to be managed differently, whereas V3 allows you to bring the octave character in and out while performing.
The octave footswitch also uses Flexi-Switch technology, allowing conventional latching operation or momentary activation when you hold the switch down.
That's particularly useful for adding octave only to selected notes, riffs or lead passages.
Expression-Controlled Octave
Connect a compatible expression pedal and the octave blend can be controlled with your foot.
This opens up some of the Life Pedal's most creative possibilities:
Octave swells
Gradually changing harmonic content
Experimental lead effects
Dynamic transitions
Feedback manipulation
Bringing octave into individual sections of a performance
For experimental players, this turns the octave from a static effect into something you can actively perform.
Three Distortion Clipping Modes
The Life Pedal's Amplitude side is based around a classic "White Face"-style distortion topology, modified with three clipping configurations.
OpAmp
Removes the clipping diodes for maximum output and an open, aggressive OpAmp drive.
This is the rawest and loudest setting.
Asymm
Uses two silicon diodes and an LED in an asymmetrical arrangement.
The result is smoother and slightly more compressed, with a response EQD compares to valve-amplifier crunch.
Symm
Uses traditional symmetrical silicon diode clipping.
Expect a tighter, more compressed classic distortion response.
These three modes make a substantial difference when matching the Life Pedal to different guitars and amplifiers.
Up to +60dB of Distortion Gain
The Distortion control provides approximately +60dB of available gain.
That means there's considerably more here than a single maximum-gain doom sound.
Back it down for crunchy distortion and amp-pushing tones, then increase it for the huge saturated sounds most closely associated with the Life Pedal.
Powerful MOSFET Clean Boost
After the octave and distortion sits the Magnitude section.
This is an all-discrete, high-impedance MOSFET clean boost designed to add very little colour of its own while providing enough output to push an amplifier's preamp significantly harder.
Use it to:
Push a valve amp into additional saturation
Add a solo level boost
Drive an already dirty amplifier harder
Encourage feedback
Increase harmonic complexity
Push another pedal downstream
Unlike the octave, the boost can operate independently.
Filter Control
The Filter is a low-pass filter with an approximate range of 500Hz to 30kHz.
Turn it anticlockwise for more high-frequency content or clockwise to tame the top end.
This is especially useful when moving between different amplifiers and cabinets, where extreme distortion settings can otherwise become overly bright.
Controls
Octave – Blends in the analogue octave-up.
Distortion – Controls distortion gain, with approximately +60dB available.
Filter – Low-pass filter for shaping the high-frequency response.
Amplitude – Output level for the octave/distortion section.
Clipping Switch – OpAmp / Asymm / Symm.
Magnitude – Output level for the clean MOSFET boost.
Expression Input – Provides external control over the octave blend.
Sunn O))) Life Pedal V3 vs V1 & V2
V3 is more than an artwork change.
The original Life Pedal emerged from the collaboration between Sunn O))) and EarthQuaker Devices in 2019. After the initial limited production sold through, V2 moved the concept into a more conventional, pedalboard-friendly enclosure.
V3 is the refined permanent-production version.
Its most important development is the dedicated octave footswitch, while the octave circuit itself was refined to make the effect more pronounced without sacrificing low end. Stephen O'Malley also designed the V3's visual treatment.
For players rather than collectors specifically chasing an earlier limited edition, V3 arguably offers the most practical implementation of the Life Pedal concept.
Who Is the Life Pedal V3 For?
The Life Pedal is an obvious choice for:
Doom
Drone
Sludge
Stoner rock
Experimental guitar
Noise
Heavy alternative
Psychedelic rock
Ambient soundscapes
Feedback-based playing
Extreme distortion
Octave-fuzz sounds
But don't assume you need a wall of Sunn amps to use it.
The different clipping modes, separate boost and adjustable octave blend give it considerably more range than its extreme reputation might suggest.
Power Requirements
The EarthQuaker Devices Sunn O))) Life Pedal V3 requires a standard regulated 9V DC, 2.1mm centre-negative power supply.
Current draw is approximately 15mA.
Do not operate the Life Pedal V3 at higher voltages. EQD recommends a pedal-specific or isolated power source.

Fair Deal Music Verdict
The Sunn O))) Life Pedal V3 is one of those pedals that makes much more sense once you stop thinking of it as simply a distortion.
Best suited for: Doom, drone, sludge, stoner rock, experimental music and players who build sounds around heavy gain and texture.
Main benefit: The octave, distortion and boost form a complete high-gain front end rather than three unrelated effects.
Standout feature: The V3 octave implementation. A dedicated Flexi-Switch footswitch, variable blend and expression control make the analogue octave genuinely playable in real time.
Customers usually upgrade from: Conventional distortion, octave-fuzz or high-gain pedals when they want a more complete heavy-gain platform.
Most commonly paired with: High-headroom valve amplifiers, expression pedals, delay and reverb.
Our tip: Dial in the distortion first with the Octave control backed off. Once the core sound works with your amplifier, gradually introduce the octave. You'll get far more usable sounds than simply turning everything to maximum.
Showroom feedback: Despite the Sunn O))) association, the V3 isn't a one-sound pedal. The separate boost and three clipping modes give it enough flexibility to work in much broader heavy and experimental rigs.
