This week's Reverb find comes from the Reverb shop Klash Drums, based out of Minneapolis. On offer is a three-piece 1960s Trixon Speedfire drum set with a black stripe wrap. What makes the Trixon set particularly unique is, of course, its melted-looking bass drum.
As we've written about before, the egg-shaped bass drum was designed by conjoining a small and large bass drum into a single shell with an internal partition. The idea was that this design could accommodate two kick pedals set up side by side.
Though Trixon also made other, more conventional kits before it folded in 1971, it's the quirkiness of the Speedfire's design that still never fails to catch players' attention. In fact, Vox (which Trixon drums were badged as for a while in the U.S.) even reissued the Telstar a couple of years ago in a four-piece configuration for modern players.
This set, however, is an original 1960s model featuring an 8x12 rack tom, 16x16 floor tom, and 14-inch melted bass drum. The kit is definitely player grade, with visible signs of wear in the wrap and some pitting and rust in the metal hoops and hardware. Aside from the drum heads (which have plenty of use left, according to the listing), everything else is all-original and totally functional.
Be sure to check out the full listing here for more details, pictures, and to make your offer on this unique piece of drum set history.
