When I bought this rather heavy chap (metal case - and I got them 2nd hand), I was expecting all the API punch, clarity and forwardness - and then some - as at the time JJ's API clones were thought by many to be better than the originals.
These mic pre's deliver on all those fronts.
What I wasn't expecting was the absolutely beautiful tone - and the glass like clarity. I'd never heard anything like it - I mean I'd used some Capi clones which were super lovely - but these guys were way way nicer.
So ... being me - I opened up the lid, and J Christos! Freakin vintage Tamuras at both input and output! so - GA80980's at the input stage and GA81720's at the output.
This was def a custom build, and I have tried to get in touch with JJ - but he's out to lunch and not taking calls for the forseeable. Hmmm.
Anyhow - you're getting a whole lot more than your regular 512's here. They sound really lovely - and will make your little recording heart shine with joy.
Plus in all probability thery're completely unique.
