**STATUS QUO TELECASTER Guitar by Jamie Davey. Used by RICK PARFITT & FRANCIS ROSSI

**STATUS QUO Fan or Collector Interest. Would suit a fan of Staus Quo band.

Background

Around 2001, Status Quo band members wanted some replica Telecasters made for them for “fly out” shows and TV appearances because their old Telecasters were becoming too old and fragile to fly. Most followers of Status Quo will be familiar with those early instruments and how dilapidated they were in later years.

The guitar technician for Slade at the time, Alex Harris, was touring with the band who were also performing shows alongside Status Quo in Germany. Status Quo’s guitar tech spoke with Alex and advised that the band needed new guitars.

Alex put Status Quo in touch with Jamie Davey, who had already made a Telecaster for Alex, this being the Jamey Davey Custom Telecaster #3 (this guitar), which had been built by Jamie for Alex in the style of Rick Parfitt’s #1 Telecaster in the summer of 2001. Jamie’s #2 guitar had been built as a Francis Rossi style Telecaster.

Alex and Jamie took their two Telecasters to the Quo band at a show in Birmingham where Rick & Francis played both guitars in their dressing room and liked them so much that they placed an order with Jamie for two similar instruments, but with some modifications and to look like their original guitars but not quite as beaten up.

In the following 10 years Jamie made a total of 16 guitars for Quo and they were featured in the movie Bula Quo.

This guitar #3 was used as a working prototype for Status Quo and at one point was fitted with a G & L bridge which was favoured by Francis Rossi, but Rick Parfitt didn’t like it so the familiar Gibson stop tail was fitted to his and Alex had the traditional Telecaster “ashtray” bridge re-fitted to this guitar. The screw holes from the G & L bridge were filled but can still be seen under the touch up paint behind the bridge (see photos in advert).

Weight: 3.84 kg / 8.48 pounds.

Condition: I would say it is in very good condition with do damage, save as to a few paint chips which I've done my best to picture for you and which are barely visible except under close inspection. There are of course the holes filled to accommodate the ashtray bridge favoured by Rick Parfitt over the G&L one which Francis Rossi used. Any questions as to condition, please hit the question button and ask me. Your name, location and contact phone number would always be useful because I do tend to be away from this site for extended periods.

PROVENANCE

A signed letter of provenance from the guitar technician whose guitar this was and who lent it to Status Quo for their use (see photo) accompanies the guitar, and I have also spoken with Jamie Davey, who confirms this.

It probably ought to be going to a Status Quo collector or fan. Guitars used by Rick Parfitt and Francis Rossi are becoming very hard to find, with Rick Parfitt's impossible to get hold of now. His ex-wife has possession of his famous old Telecaster and that's unlikely to find its way onto the market.
