Stunning Jaime Julia concert classical (nylon) guitar with a cedar top and Brazilian rosewood back and sides from ‘97 as can be seen from the luthier’s label. Mr Julia was the head luthier of Alhambra guitars; this lovely instrument was not made by Alhambra, but rather originated from his own workshop. It was built and finished to a very high standard, as demonstrated by the beautifully decorated headstock but also by the varnish present on the inside of the guitar — a technique that protects the wood of the guitar in humid environments. In addition, the tuning machines are some of the highest quality I’ve seen on a classical guitar, as evidenced in the photographs — no play whatsoever with consistent tuning torque across all strings and a reassuringly solid feel.
On the most important aspect, namely the sound, what can be said is that it’s a quintessentially Spanish sound. A loud, but warm sound full of colour and depth. Suitable for all repertoire but especially for that of the expressive romantic period.
Given its age, there are some minor blemishes on the body, most notably on the back — some of the varnish has worn off on a corner joining the back and sides. There are no cracks and no major scratches apart from obvious player’s marks.
Ideally local pickup from London or surroundings is preferred, but fully insured shipping can of course be arranged. A Hiscox hard case can be included.
