About This Listing

The Amazing vintage analog Seck Producer mixing desk! 2 x microphone channels, an auxiliary channel and four stereo line / phono in channels. The separation this thing gives a mix compared to in the box is night and day. In the video I had drums in channel 1, bass in channel 2, strings / synths in channel 3 and vocals in channel 4. Just having the ability to adjust channel volumes in real time allowed for a lot of creative decisions you wouldn’t make in the digital realm - riding the faders - how emotive mixes are engineered!
I know he’s a bit cosmetically challenged - some rust spots on the paintwork could be lightly sanded and painted over - but aside from the headphone outputs - he’s fully working and sounds gorgeous. There is one small issue with channel 4, I dropped a small (6mm) piece of plastic - and somehow it ended up wedged in the bottom of the slider - so it’s fully working - but doesn’t close all the way down. Annoying.
Starting with the microphone channels - these both have inserts so you can use the insert send as a direct out - two independent outs! They sound very clear and broadcasty - no real analog colour to speak of - but they can of course be overdriven at the gain stage if you want a bit of lush analog saturation - great on vocals or acoustic instruments! Channel one has a 3 band eq to add air, punch and deepness. When you use both mics - the compressor section comes into play - which is utterly fantastic. It was built to “duck” one mic over the other during radio interviews, but the creative possibililites are literally endless. You can put two different mics on a vocal - set gentle limiting and balance the mics to taste - you’ll get vocal tones and added transparent energy you’d Never get using just two mic preamps. Same goes for guitars and acoustic instruments - and on drums it’s surreal - with one mic on the kick and the other hanging above the snare you can add either gentle motion or massive pumping energy depending on how fast you set the release and comp amount. Worth the unit price for this alone!
The four stereo channels have three gain stages. First are the small input trim pots - I’ve set these pairs at equal gain for stereo use using a sine wave. Next is the line / phono switches - as you see in the video, you can get lovely analog saturation just by raising the channel slider (3rd gain stage) - but by switching from line to phono you get full on distortion - which is ace for creative bass and drums - but as you can hear really allows the synths / strings and vocals to cut through the mix - analog saturation like this is amazing for adding life and perceived volume to a mix. An oddity is the AUX output. It’s bloody amazing. You can switch this independent mono output of the full mix from full range - to 475 Hz or 275Hz - thus introducing a massive warm bottom end to the audio. It’s freakin’ awesome - and a very clever addition to the desks’ architecture. Even the massive pan slider is creatively useful. Again - odd but clever.
So - inserts on all channels - desk fully working aside from the meters (right only moving) - headphone outs (and small bit of plastic in slider 4) - I think this is the only one for sale in the world atm - it’s an audio / recording / mix engineers box of joy - all rack mountable too!
8 channel jack loom and 10 jack to phono adaptors included!
Runs on 240 volts - all the way to audio Nirvana!
