You are looking at a rare and unique 1920's / 30's era Comet (model unknown) carbon microphone. This was a very common design for it's time and it comes with the all metal painted period ring and equally beautiful 1930's cast iron desk stand in which to display the mic. This classic style of microphone was made by several American companies before disappearing altogether around the late 1930's to early 1940's.
These early microphones were suspended with springs as a primitive shock mount before the industry converted to other forms of internal padding to keep unwanted feedback to a minimum. The spring mics had a good run though for about 20 years before eventually being phased out.
These carbon mics also needs the proper audio equipment to operate.
This microphone itself is in very good overall physical condition considering it's age as seen in the pictures provided. The Comet element shows typical lite signs of wear (mostly lite pitting and scratches) but has never been disassembled. It has all of it's original components and looks very good overall but I don't know how to properly wire this mic so I really have no idea if there is any output at all? This mic and could be rewired if you know the correct diagram. I would rate this mic an easy 7 + on a scale of 1 -10. The mic comes with older original steel springs too which is pretty rare to find these days. The springs are a little rusty but work excellent.
The mic comes with an all metal (pot metal) ring that is period to the mic and in beautiful condition. The original black paint shows zero wear and there are no cracks or fractures which is always a plus.
The stand is a period 1930's American model stand that works very well with the mic. Very appealing to the eye and compliments the mic nicely. The base has an extra thick cast iron base with a painted finish showing virtually no wear. The chrome riser is free of dents but there is a heavy scratch and a few small nicks. The base has a classic 3 tier "waterfall" design and weigh about 5 pounds so you won't tip the mic easily. There is just lite rust stains on the bottom of the base.
The mic ring with stand is appx 15 inches tall X 6 inches wide. The ring is appx 6 inches wide while the actual Shure element is only 2 1/2 inches across if you include the side hooks.
If you are a serious collector of vintage Americans mics then you know what a unique mic this is. She'll make an awesome display piece anywhere it sits in the home, studio or office.
