Please feel free to make an offer on this instrument.
This is a rare opportunity to buy an as new Dave Gregory mandolin in pristine condition. It is based on a c1910 Gibson F4 model, with 3 points on the
body rather than the 2 points which subsequently defined the F shaped
body.
The
instrument was approximately 80% complete when master luthier Dave
Gregory of York died in March 2016. It was not a commisssion but an
instrument Dave had wanted to make due to his longstanding interest
in the instruments of the Gibson mandolin family. Because it was not
commissioned it is unnumbered.
The final 5 pictures show the progress Dave had made on the instrument. The spruce top, indluding
soundhole inlay, and bottom were complete and the finished maple sides were
glued to the top and bound in cream ivoroid. The ebony fretboard was
slotted, inlaid and bound but required fretting. The shaping of the
maple neck was complete and the head bound and partially inlaid, with the
remaining pearl already cut. The neck was glued to the body. The back is bookmatched maple.
The
mandolin was completed by Gordon Hewson and Martyn Banks at Oakwood
instruments of Leeds. It has a dark satin sunburst finish.
A rectangular hardshell Hiscox case is included.
The shipping price is estimated and would need to be confirmed, but collection would be preferred.
A link to a video demonstrating its sound is attached to this listing
I am selling this on behalf of Dave's partner and it can be viewed by appointment in York.
