About This Listing

Klassic Keys GB sometimes handle modern synthesizers, not just vintage classics. This Yamaha Montage 8 was p/exed from a top Scottish music producer, on a Sequential Poly Evolver deal. It really is in "mint" condition. Serial number is 1036 ~ not too many made, methinks. The instrument was taken out the box, set-up for a photo-shoot & test drive, then replaced in the box, all snug and dry. There is the owners manual & IEC (kettle) mains cord - Montage runs @ 220Vac (surprisingly NOT smart auto-voltage-select). If it ends up in USA, a step down/up voltage convertor will be required for operation.
So, for a wee change, I thought I would do an appraisal of the Yamaha flagship workstation, from a neutral point of view. .....just like my mate, Gordon Reid (Sound on Sound)...Hi, Gordon!
On de-boxing, my first impression was as to how pleasing the keyboard is to view. A lot of today's synths are "boxy" and simply, dull....( have to praise most Moog synths, however...have they got it right, or what?). Its sleek and is just "cool"...shades of Italian styling (?). So, after the photo-shoot, the "8" was fired up. I had a Kronos recently; took so long to kick in, I had time to have another gin & tonic, wash the dishes & feed the cat.....well, it took a minute or two, to be accurate.....the Yammy was ready to work in 20 seconds, which is a BIG feature. Without any manual reference, I was selecting patches instantly. The grouping of sound banks (piano/organ etc) is clearly in front of you, and/or by touch-screen or inc buttons.....then any single "live" patch can be assisted by various additions of sympathetic beats/phantom extra band members, the more you apply the "magic knob". Its instant FUN! Before I knew it, 20 minutes had passed, while I twiddled away..... Now, its 2021.....I suspect by now, that sampling has gotten as good as it can be; triple-strike sampling @ -20*, in a vacuum, in the dark......(thats a joke). Suffice to suggest, that all the major brands have reached the highest standards of audio playback possible? So is it that relevant to compare different manufacturers? Re the Montage, it sounds good to me...so did the Kronos...all they can do now, is add waveforms/FM/morphing/FX etc all day long, and allow various filters etc to alter things..... they ALL have fabulous velocity/pressure keyboards, with 120+ polyphony, hundreds of FX, sequencers & arpeggiators....with splits, stacks, half-nelson, somersaults etc etc....and THOUSANDS of patch/performance memories...ho, hum.....
Summary:- forget all the numbers, I just liked the Montage from the start.....if I was in a production studio career, I would certainly choose one. 88-keys might not be necessary, but why not?
