The second Clarendon solid body, built in 2019 and used at home by me to test various pickups, so has picked up a few small dings and scratches. The pickup I settled on is a Golden Age vintage style P90, modified with alnico 3 magnets and copper shielding around the coil for a smoother top end than the regular alnico 5s.
This model has some slightly unusual features:
The string holders (or hitch pins) behind the bridge are derived from the Doolin/Elliot design more often seen on high end steel string acoustic bridges, and combine excellent coupling to the body with a slightly more relaxed feel to the string tension than through-body stringing tends to give. At the headstock the end of the fretboard serves as a nut behind the zero fret, and the retainer bar keeps the break angle (and thus the perceived tension) the same for all six strings.
Please be aware that this instrument has NO string ground, but the pickup, pickup cavity and control cavity are well shielded, and the guitar is no noisier than my Tele or Jazzmaster. I probably wouldn't recommend it for very high gain situations, though...
