Fender sales continued to grow in 1959, and the Stratocaster of this year was quite similar to that of 1958. Some changes did occur, however, including the introduction of a "slab" rosewood fingerboard that was attached on-top of the maple neck about halfway through the year. The other major change of this year was a gradual shift from a single-ply white pickguard to a three-ply white-black-white celluloid nitrate pickguard. Over time, the composition of these pickguards lends a greenish hue which varies depending on exposure to light. The neck shape also continued to evolve into a thinner, more modern profile.
