The Boss DS-1 is one of the most iconic stompboxes ever produced. Appearing on the pedal boards of both bedroom players and arena rockers alike for decades, this pedal uses a simple, single op-amp variable gain circuit.

While all Boss pedals were originally produced in Japan, production moved to Taiwan in the early 1990s. As the DS-1 is one of the few Boss pedals to have retained its name while going through several circuit design changes, the earlier made-in-Japan models (1978 - 1989) have become more highly sought after.

In 1994 the Toshiba TA7136AP op amp was replaced with the Rohm BA728N. In 2000 the op amp was replaced with the Mitsubishi M5223AL. More recently, the op-amp was changed in 2007 to the NJM3404AL.

Years of Production: 1978 - present
