The early '80s was a time of transition for Fender. In 1981, Fender Director of Marketing, Dan Smith spearheaded an upgraded Strat model with a smaller headstock and 4-bolt neck plate in the style of a pre-CBS era Stratocaster. This guitar included a modern X-1 pickup in the bridge position, and has since been termed the "Dan Smith" Stratocaster by collectors. By mid-1983, the "Dan Smith" Stratocaster was replaced by a lower-end Strat version with a single tone control.
