Ludwig Standard 5x14 Wood Snare 1970s

Reverb Estimated Used Price Range

  • $90$320

Released in 1968 in response to the influx of low-end Japanese import drums, the Ludwig Standard Series was marketed towards amateur and semi-pro players. Despite the lower price tag and simple albeit flimsy hardware, the Standard Series shells were constructed in Ludwig’s Chicago factory to the exact same specifications as their iconic Super Classic line. The Standards were not particularly successful, and were discontinued sometime in the mid 70s.

Features: Eight smooth Standard lugs, P-83 snare strainer, black/silver inverted triangle badge

Shell construction: 3-ply maple/poplar/maple with reinforcing rings and Granitone interior finish

Finishes: Various colors of wrapped finishes were offered in three patterns: Strata (oyster-style), Mist (sparkle) and Astro (faux-holographic swirls). The Strata wraps are particularly susceptible to fading and Astros scratch easily, which can affect value.

*Note: the drums pictured feature upgraded P-85 snare strainers
