The Fender Precision Bass ranks as one of the most revolutionary instrument designs ever. The original Precision Bass was renamed the Standard Precision Bass in 1981 to avoid confusion with newer models. The name was changed again in 1988 to the American Standard Precision Bass to denote basses made in Fender's American factory (though from 2000 to 2008 it was called the American Series Precision Bass).
