Taylor's 500 series is distinguished by solid Mahogany back and sides with an Engelmann Spruce top and higher end appointments, such as abalone inlays and rosettes with bound bodies and fingerboards.
The Taylor 512ce is the cutaway electronic-equipped version of the discontinued 512 Grand Concert. It featured a Fishman Onboard Blender system up until 2004, when the electronics were changed to Taylor's own Expression System.
The mid-2000s also saw a change to diamond abalone inlays and rosette, replacing the former dot inlays and wood rosette.
