The Gibson Super 400 was (and remains) the company's top of the line archtop hollowbody. Its design changed over the twenty years of original production. The scale length was quickly changed from Gibson's typical 24.75 inches to 25.5 inches in 1936, along with a widening of the upper bout at the same time. The pearl inlays on the bridge were gone after 1941. The tuners changed several times early in production. Also, a Natural finish became available in 1939. These specimens are worth considerably more.

Though original production ceased in the mid '50s, Gibson's Custom Shop continues to produce contemporary reissues. In 1951 the Gibson Super 400 CES (cutaway with pickups) became the carrier of the Super 400 legacy into the 1980s.

Years of Production: 1934 - 1955 (This model was not produced during WWII)
