The Texan or the FT-79 Texan was the heir to an older flattop produced by Epiphone starting in the early '40s. After Gibson purchased Epiphone in 1957, the model was redesigned to look more like Gibson's slopped-shoulder J-45, but with a shorter scale-length. It was at this point that Gibson also updated the model name to the Texan.
