From the Price Guide

The 4003 S8 is one of a handful of 8-string basses Rickenbacker has produced since the '60s. While earlier models like the 4008 had non-uniform tuning machines one what is now called the "potato" headstock, the 4003 S8 uses a standard Rickenbacker headstock shape. Unlike some other 4003 basses, the 4003 S8 does not have any binding on the neck or body.
