Overview

Back in 1985, E-MU Systems designed a spiritual successor to its popular Drumulator called the SP-12. Its name stands for what it does—"sampling percussion at 12 bits"—and it quickly became one of the very first widely produced and commercially successful drum machine/samplers, giving producers and musicians the ability to sample and sequence innovative backdrops for their songs. After just two years of production, E-MU replaced the SP-12 with the more powerful SP-1200, which ditched the presets and doubled the sample memory of the original. But the SP-12 is still a classic, and a great low-fi tool for musicians looking for hands-on early sampling experimentation.
