Up for sale, a 1974 Fender Competition Mustang, freshly refretted and loaded with a pair of Lollar Blackface boutique single coil pickups. An honestly played and tonally powerful little screamer, this Mustang delivers plenty of Fender sparkle and snap, with clear, cutting tones from the bridge pickup and girthier, warmer sounds with the neck pickup singled out. The two on/off/on pickup switches allow for a great thinned out quack too, when the pickups are engaged out of phase. The guitar is quite light at 7lbs 4oz and dialed in with fresh 11-50 strings here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar where we specialize in Fender Offset guitars.

The neck has a medium C profile with moderate shoulder and uniform depth as you travel up the fretboard. The rosewood fretboard has pearl dot inlay and has been refretted with jumbo fretwire which has ample height and crown, showing zero wear and playing cleanly in every register. The scale length is a full 24" and the nut measures 1 9/16" in width. The guitar retains the original Fender "F" tuners, and the deeply ambered headstock face features the stock "Mustang" decal.

The body features a pair of matching Lollar Blackface single coils with flat pole pieces. The overall tonal profile of these pickups offers prominent midrange, clear treble, and full bass with a well-defined, piano-like attack. Lollar uses scatterwound wax potted coils with Alnico V magnets degaussed to vintage '60s Fender specs. The pots are original to the guitar, made by CTS and dating to the 10th week of '73. Hardware includes the original chrome control plate, bridge, and vibrato, as well as the original white pearloid pickguard and knobs. All body routes are untouched and original shielding plates are intact. The chrome shows heavy patina on the bridge base, saddles, and vibrato fulcrum, yet the vibrato unit has a very fluid and smooth response. The vibrato arm has been substituted with a threaded style which works well.

Cosmetically, this guitar has definitely seen its fair share of use, with heavy wear through the finish where the forearm crosses the top, part arm wear and part a point-of-impact. The competition stripe is deeply ambered, and the gloss body finish shows prominent horizontal checking. The guitar shows buckle rash on the back and an assortment of minor dings and scuffs on the body as a whole. The neck profile has some small nicks too, but nothing distracting to the palm or structural in nature.

The original hardshell case is included. The case retains its gray thatched exterior and black leather ends, with the band name "Blue Wind" stenciled on the lid. The original outer latches and handle are intact.

We use industrial 1/2" bubble wrap as well as 1" hard foam and double walled boxes where applicable to make sure your purchase arrives safely. Strings are detuned, switch tips and endpins packed separately, and all usual precautions taken to ensure that our instruments and amps arrive exactly as described.
