Video: ZZ Ward Talks Songwriting and Performs "Put the Gun Down" and "Help Me Mama"

From the time that she was a little girl, ZZ Ward knew that she could sing. But she really found her voice for the first time at 16 years old when she sat down behind one of her father's Hammond B3 organs and wrote her first song.

A lot has changed in the years since ZZ wrote that first song. She has grown and evolved as a musician, continuing to develop and refine her voice and her music.

She released her debut album, Til the Casket Drops, in 2012, which featured her first single and the song she performs in the video above, "Put the Gun Down." That song broke into the AAA radio chart's top 10 a few months after its release.

Currently, ZZ Ward is touring small, intimate venues in support of her newest album, The Storm, which drops on June 30.

About her newest project, ZZ told us that it's going to be different from her previous work. She said that with this album, she really worked to hone in on what she loves about music, with a deeper focus on her major genre influences — hip–hop and the blues.
