Video: Support Skate Schools Around the World with Tone For Change's Skateistan Fuzz

KHDK's David Karon and his wife Pavla Karon have launched Tone For Change, a new brand that will build and sell effects pedals to raise money for a variety of charities. For their first release, they've partnered with Skateistan—a nonprofit that teaches and empowers children in Afghanistan, Cambodia, and South Africa through skateboarding—to build a unique fuzz pedal.

The Skateistan Fuzz is available in two different enclosures. The limited-edition Skatedeck version is built with pieces of used skateboards purchased from Skateistan schools in Kabul and Mazar-e-Sharif Afghanistan. The Raw Skateistan pedal features an all-aluminum enclosure "inspired by the rails you would grind in your favorite skate park," according to Tone for Change.

The Skateistan Fuzz is available exclusively on Reverb, with a limited run of only 250 Skatedeck enclosures, and Raw enclosures only available for a limited time. All of Tone For Changes' profits from the sales will support Skateistan Skate Schools.

"Growing up, skateboarding and music were my passions. I am beyond excited to merge these two worlds in this incredible fuzz pedal and help Skateistan continue to impact the lives of vulnerable children," Karon says.

As you can hear in our video above, the Skateistan pedal is built with a mosfet circuit, giving it a rich, toothy tone. The Tone and Body knobs allow you to shape the sound to your liking, with the Tone control kicking in a low-pass filter when turned counter-clockwise or kicking in a high-pass filter when turned clockwise. The Body knob can be used to add mids to fatten up your sound, regardless of the Tone knob's setting.
