Dave Cheney of Castle Drum Co. hand-crafts each snare himself just outside of Boston. Some of the Reverb crew met Dave at Summer NAMM and were taken by his conical stave Keystone snare drum. What about it is so unique? First and foremost, it’s made of a swirling birdseye maple for a beautifully grained finish. But most importantly, however, it sports a 14” top and a 13” bottom to give it a conical shape, like a high-end studio.
The shape of the Keystone lends itself to better tone, more tuning capabilities, and provides really fantastic sensitivity. It’s so effective at all dynamic ranges that you can even play it with your fingers. Although it’s a stave snare, it feels and acts like it’s constructed of one singular piece of wood. The Castle Drum Co. Keystone snare is great for any application, whether it be concert or orchestral, or even playing those ghost notes you like to throw into your nightly gigs.
