If you want a brand new, customized Bilt S.S. Zaftig, you’re going to have to wait a while. Hand-crafted by Bill Henss and Tim Thelen out of Des Moines, Iowa, Bilt guitars are in high demand and, as such, have a waiting list. But if you’re desperate for your Bilt fix now, you can find this stunning semi-hollow up on Reverb. We took a look at just what makes the S.S. Zaftig such a killer guitar, and trust us, there’s a lot to love.
The S.S. Zaftig has a curvaceous chambered alder body at a 25.5” scale length, lightweight enough that it’s easy on the back and shoulders. Its hard maple neck with rosewood fingerboard typically sports dot inlays (or square, if you’re willing to pay a little extra) and has a 9.5” radius. A two-way truss rod, Kluson tuners, and bone nut complete the outfit.
As for the rest of the body, the S.S. Zaftig boasts a beautiful Mastery bridge and tremolo system along with Lollar Regal pickups for a fat but versatile humbucker sound. The three-way pickup selector switch lets you choose between neck and bridge pickups, or combine them both, and the guitar itself has your typical tone and volume knobs. However, there’s another switch on the guitar; one that, when switched into the up position, gives you more control over volume and tone via two extra rollers.
