Recently, we here at Reverb had a chance to welcome Aly & AJ into the studio to perform a couple of songs and talk a bit about their trajectory as a band. Comprised of sisters Aly and Amanda (AJ) Michalka, Aly & AJ have grown a lot in the roughly 13 years since their debut release, Into the Rush.
"We were really young when we put out our first record—we were 13 and 15—and obviously our taste in music was a lot different back then, you know, as to what it is now," Aly told us, when asked about the group's most recent release, last year's Ten Years EP. "For us, it feels kind of almost like we're a new band, like we've completely started over."
AJ continued, "And the electronic, kind of '80s-inspired synth-pop sound came about in a really natural way when we were in the studio navigating where we were gonna go." She goes on to explain that along with the help of producers Ryan Spraker Jamie Sierota, this new EP establishes a new foundation for their sound.
