Pantera Drummer and Co-Founder Vinnie Paul Dead at 54

Pantera drummer and co-founder Vinnie Paul has died, according to a post on the band's official Facebook account. As of this time, there are no further details on the cause of death. Paul was 54 years old.

Born Vincent Paul Abbott in Abilene Texas, Paul formed Pantera with younger brother Dimebag Darrell in 1981. The band's classic lineup—rounded out by bassist Rex Brown and vocalist Phil Anselmo—helped to define the "groove" substrain of metal through the course of nine studio albums. Epitomized by their landmark 1990 release, Cowboys From Hell, Paul's intense double kick work and deep pocket grooves formed the foundation to a sound that influenced a generation of metal players.

Following the breakup of Pantera in 2003, Paul formed Damageplan with Dimebag Darrell. It was during a Damageplan show in 2004 that Darrell was shot and killed.

Since 2006 Paul had also served as drummer for metal supergroup Hellyeah.
