This week's Find of the Week will have you rockin' in the free world: it's a Fender Deluxe 5E3 amp that was formerly used by Neil Young on tour.
Heads will know that the 15-watt tweed workhorse has long been associated with the Godfather of Grunge. This particular Deluxe was purchased by Mahar's Vintage Guitars in California by Neil's longtime guitar tech, Larry Cragg. As an early version of the narrow-panel amp with just two volume knobs and a shared tone control, it was among several amps used in regular rotation in Neil's backline—after all, if you're touring with vintage pieces, it's best to carry backups.
Cragg made a handful of modifications to the amplifier, including switching the speaker to a brown label Fender Jensen ceramic. While the amp was originally run with 6L6 output tubes and 5AR4 power tubes, the seller has returned 6V6s and a GZ34 rectifier to the amp, while working in a new power switch. They also come with the Ruby Tube preamp tubes that were Neil's preference. The cabinet, tweed, grille and grille cloth are all-original and in good condition despite plenty of use.
