"Acoustic Uprising": Documenting the Percussive Acoustic Guitar-Playing Community

After three years spent interviewing hundreds of musicians and fans in more than ten countries, Australian percussive-"FingerStyle" guitarist Drew Roller releases hisAcoustic Uprising documentary today.

The film focuses on the FingerStyle subgenre of guitar-playing, which sees in the acoustic guitar a variety of dynamically playable surfaces, rather than just an instrument built for traditional chording along the neck. By using the body of the guitar as a drum, while emphasizing finger-tapping and harmonics, FingerStyle players often create a wall of sound from their guitars.

The featured interviews include luminaries of the style, such as Kaki King, Newton Faulkner, Sungha Jung, and Andy McKee. Our friend Tommy Emmanuel even makes an appearance to talk about how FingerStyle playing has shaped his work as a guitarist.
