Here is a beautiful vintage Roland RE-201 Space Echo, made in Japan and dating to around 1980.Serial Number: 985941Based on the commonly used dating method for Roland’s older six-digit serial numbers, together with the cabinet construction and hardware found on this particular unit, it was most likely manufactured around September 1980.Roland does not officially publish the exact production date of individual vintage units from their serial numbers, so I prefer to describe this one conservatively as circa 1980 rather than make an absolute claim.Most importantly, this RE-201 has been fully serviced in Japan by an experienced Japanese specialist in vintage musical equipment and electronics.The unit has been carefully inspected, serviced, adjusted, and tested, and it is fully functional and working beautifully.The RE-201 is one of those machines that is difficult to fully appreciate until you actually play through a real one.The three playback heads, continuously running tape loop, spring reverb, Repeat Rate, Intensity, and tone controls all interact in a wonderfully organic way. Small adjustments can take the sound from a subtle warm slapback to deep, drifting echoes, while higher Intensity settings bring out the famous self-oscillating character that made the Space Echo such a legendary studio tool.There is a movement and depth to a real tape echo that is very difficult to reproduce exactly.
