NS Design WAVc 5 String Full Size Electric Upright Bass 2025 - Transparent Red

I used this instrument to practice on while recovering from surgery. It was also my first five string double bass and it helped me learn how to integrate a B string into my jazz playing. I never gigged with it but I did play on it a few times a week for 2-3 months until I was able to return to playing my acoustic basses. In terms of playability, it's a different beast from both upright bass and electric bass guitar but it's super fun to play on and the low register is very satisfying.

I purchased it from a shop that upgraded the strings and tuners for me. The stock tuners only work with the stock light-gauge strings and I wanted a setup closer to what I am used to on upright bass. If you already play upright, you will be pleased to know that this instrument is upgraded to use Evah Pirazzi Weich G, D, and A strings and Spirocore Mittel E string and B strings. If you have different string preferences, you can easily replace them due to the upgraded tuners. One thing to note, when drilling out the holes for the upgraded tuners the finish chipped next to one of the tuners inside of the paddle-shaped headstock. You can't see the chip unless you are looking inside of the headstock. The chip is clearly visible in one of the item pictures.

In terms of electronics, the instrument is passive and has an arco/pizz switch. I stay on the arco switch and it works great for both a natural plucking sound and a decent and usable arco sound. Nice big sound plugged-in.

Additional wear:

- There is slight, expected marring under the strings that is typical of all fretless instruments
- There are a couple of flaws in the finish in the neck that are visible in photos. Keep in mind that there was a reflection from my phone that looks like a white "chip". Look carefully to make sure you aren't seeing what is actually a reflection.

Given the tuner upgrades, string upgrades, and extra tripods you are getting an excellent value for your money. Happy purchasing!
