A rare surviving example of a mid-century Japanese-made Argonne extension speaker cabinet, retaining its original PD-64 oval paper-cone driver, original grille cloth, factory identification badge, and original Japanese Machinery & Metals Inspection Institute (JMI) export inspection sticker.

This compact cabinet was originally designed as a low-power extension speaker and has been fitted with a professionally installed 1/4" mono input jack for modern amplifier compatibility. It has been fully tested and is ready for studio, harmonica, experimental guitar, and low-volume recording applications.

Sound & Performance

The original oval paper-cone driver delivers a distinctly vintage voice with focused mids, fast transient response, naturally limited low-end extension, and early speaker compression when pushed.

Clean tones remain articulate and responsive, while increased signal levels produce the kind of organic cone breakup and lo-fi texture that recording engineers and garage-rock enthusiasts often seek from small vintage speakers.

Its character works particularly well for:

  • Lo-fi guitar recording
  • Harmonica amplification
  • Surf-inspired clean tones
  • Garage rock
  • Experimental studio applications
  • Desktop amplifier setups
  • Re-amping projects

Bench Test Results

One of the most surprising aspects of this cabinet was its real-world performance during testing.

Although the original driver is factory-stamped for a maximum input of 1.5 watts, the cabinet was successfully bench-tested with a fully cranked Hotone Nano solid-state amplifier connected to its 4-ohm load. The speaker handled the test without voice-coil rub, mechanical distress, or other performance issues, producing strong output along with natural vintage compression and breakup.

This observation should be viewed as a real-world test result rather than a guaranteed power-handling specification, but it demonstrates that the original driver remains healthy and functional despite its age.

A demonstration video from bench testing is available in the listing media.

Condition

Very clean vintage condition overall.

The cabinet retains its original finish, original grille cloth, original rear badge, and original speaker. The grille remains tight and presentable, and the cabinet displays only the normal cosmetic wear expected from a vintage piece of this age.

The rear panel has been fitted with a flush-mounted 1/4" mono input jack to allow easy connection to modern equipment.

Please review all photos carefully for cosmetic details.

Important Power Information

This cabinet contains its original vintage driver, which remains stamped with a factory rating of 1.5 watts at 4 ohms.

For long-term preservation, it is best suited for:

  • Micro amplifier heads
  • Desktop amplifiers
  • Harmonica amplifiers
  • Re-amping setups
  • Low-power recording applications

Buyers should use appropriate caution when pairing amplifiers and understand that vintage speakers can be damaged if driven beyond their safe operating limits.
