I am selling a Hofner 174 SG style guitar, made in West Germany around 1974. Hofner made this model from around 1969 into the mid /late 70’s. The translucent cherry finish has lots of checking and seams and the body has many dings and nicks. But the guitar feels solid and plays well.

The neck pickup has strong sound, the bridge pickup is much softer but is usable. This model also has a nice vibrola style tailpiece that is well designed and responsive. It includes the rare tremolo arm, which is often missing on guitars like this.

The pickups are 513 models, with a center blade and plastic area around them. They are single coil - the 174 also came with wooden “Hi-Fi” pickups, though they are seldom seen. The 513 pickups were used on numerous Hofner models in the late 60’s/70’s. The neck pickup on this guitar is loud and full, especially for a single coil made around 1972. The bridge pickup, though it has no reading, is probably 2/3 as loud as the neck, with a very bright treble sound. The reading issue could be with the wiring, to the pickup - it's been the same volume since I have played it. The bridge pickup mixes well with the neck pickup when they are both engaged and neck volume levels are experimented with.

The finish cracks around the neck joints look to be just in the finish, I removed the neck and looked for breaks but none were apparent.  Pictures included. The neck is solid in the body when the guitar is strung.

Everything seems to be original on this guitar, including the frets which may have been polished but show little appreciable wear. The neck is straight with some relief, the truss rod works and uses a 5/32 hex tool. The tuners are Van Ghent 70’s version and hold tune nicely.

Some tech notes:

Length: 38 inches

Lower bout: 14 inches

Depth: 1.5 inches

Scale: 25.25 inches

Fretboard: Rosewood

Neck pickup reading: 9.6

Bridge pickup reading: 9.4

Both pickups reading: No reading

Truss rod: tightens and loosens with 5/32 hex tool

I’ve described this 58 year old guitar as best as I can with words and images, if you have any questions be sure to ask me before you buy.

Will pack professionally and ship quickly.
