Up for sale, a Charlie Stringer’s Snarling Dogs Very-Tone Dog SDP-6 in near-mint condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original box. Produced by Kenny Segall (The Boxx, RedZone), this Snarling Dogs offering is effectively a “Varitone in a Box,” taking Gibson’s unique rotary control (best associated with the ES-345 and B.B. King’s Lucille) and expanding the functionality with two switchable modes and a Volume Compensator to adjust levels for the various tone selections.
Just like the original Varitone, this Very-Tone Dog SDP-6 is a notch tone filter, with markedly different sounds available at each of the five positions on the Tone Selector switch. The Attack Control switch toggles between Snarl and Bite modes, enabling a grand total of 10 different tones: in Snarl mode, the five modes are Jazz, Blues, Country, Surf, and ‘60s British, and in Bite mode you have Semi-Hollow, Honky-Tonk Rock, Rock-A-Billy, Twang, and Wild Dog. The sixth mode, Bypass Overdrive, takes out the tone controls and effectively turns the Very-Tone Dog into a transparent preamp boost, warm and natural-sounding with a touch of grit when dialed up.
There are just a few faint marks on the silver enclosure, the green silkscreen graphics are pristine, and the original chickenhead knobs are present.
The original box is included.
